The USTA Boys’ and Girls’ National Indoor Championships returned to the junior calendar last week for the first time in 18 years – which turned out to be two years older than its 2017 titlists.

A pair of 16-year-olds from Long Island, N.Y., emerged as the returning tournament's champions, with Cannon Kingsley, of Northport, N.Y., and Michelle Sorokko, of Little Neck, N.Y., winning the singles titles at the first National Indoors event held since 1999.

Kingsley defeated 18-year-old University of Indiana recruit Carson Haskins of Ballwin, Mo., 6-3, 6-0, to win the Boys’ 18s title at the Overland Park Racquet Club in Overland Park, Kan.

Sorokko, who is coached by her sister, Kathrin, beat 16-year-old New Yorker Sonia Tartakovsky, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Girls’ 18s championship at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, Mass.

The USTA National Junior Indoor Championships were first played at the 18s level in 1915 for the boys and 1920 for the girls, expanded to incorprate the 12s and 14s age groups in 1972. The tournament was phased out of the national junior circuit in 1999 as the USTA implemented an “optimum” competition calendar for junior players but was brought back this year in recognition of the number of indoor events being played in northern or cold-weather states.
