USTA National Coach Eric Nunez is the captain of the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team competing this week at the 16-and-under Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas in Campeche, Mexico. Al ataque!!
Estamos a un día de la competencia y hoy se hará el sorteo para saber contra quién jugamos mañana. La preparación el día antes de jugar es todo mental. El trabajo de los jugadores para prepararse ya está hecho. Ahora es afinar un par de detalles, lograr encontrar ese enfoque competitivo y darles mucha confianza a los jugadores.
Empiezo mi día levantándome muy temprano. Más temprano de lo normal ya que estoy con ganas de ir a las canchas y empezar el día. Me encuentro con los jugadores en el desayuno. Hoy será un día muy caliente y los chicos tienen que hidratarse y comer muy bien. Nos subimos al transporte con el resto del equipo de Estados Unidos y vamos a las canchas. Si nos vieras... somos 16 personas en un transporte cada uno con su bolso de tenis... pero los jugadores están feliz y haciendo bromas en el camino.
Entrenamos casi 2 horas, haciendo muchos puntos de singles entre los 3 jugadores del equipo. Doy una vuelta para ver a la competencia, y tomar unas notas mentales de cómo juegan. Nuestros chicos terminan bien el entreno y están ansiosos saber contra quién juegan.
Sale el sorteo y en sub 16 vamos contra México en la cancha central mañana! Tendremos una buena prueba mañana jugando contra el equipo local en el estadio, pero para esto estamos y será una excelente experiencia para los chicos. En sub 14 Estados Unidos juega contra Costa Rica.
Después de la ceremonia del torneo nos regresamos al hotel para cenar, descansar y alistar todo para mañana. Mañana iremos con todo y a representar nuestro país! VAMOS USA!!!

Al ataque!
It’s the day before the main competition, meaning they will release the draw to tell us who we’re competing against tomorrow. All of the preparation the day before is mental. The players’ job to prepare themselves is already done. Now it’s time to finalize a couple details: manage to find that competitive approach and give the players lots of confidence.
I start my day by waking up very early. I’m ready earlier than normal and am excited to go to the courts and start the day. I meet up with the players at breakfast. Today will be a really hot day, and the boys have to hydrate and eat very well. We get on the shuttle with the rest of the U.S. team, and we go to the courts. If you could see us… 16 people in a small bus, each with their own tennis bag… but the players are all happy and making jokes along the way.
We practiced for about 2 hours, playing mostly singles points with three players. I walked around to take a look at the competition and take mental notes about how they play. After a great practice, the boys are eager to know who they’ll be up against.
The draw was released, and in 16-and-under, we’re up against Mexico tomorrow on center court! We will have a good, tough match tomorrow playing against the local team in the stadium, but because of this, it will be an excellent experience for the boys. In 14-and-under, the United States is playing Costa Rica.
After the ceremony, we return to our hotel to have dinner, rest and prepare everything for tomorrow. Tomorrow we will come with everything we have to represent our country!
