The second day at the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships was a grind. It is the only day of the tournament where players play two singles matches in a single day -- a tough feat, especially when you are competing against the toughest college players in the country.

The match of the day was Washington’s Denise Dy stunning upset of top-seed Jana Juricova. Dy fought hard and kept her composure after dropping the second set, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Matches were very unpredictable because every player has a fighting chance, which Dy explains, "It makes me think how strong the field is. Even though you are seeded, even though I am seeded, everyone can knock out anybody."

The Columbia tennis team came out in full force again to support their teammate Haig Schneiderman. Haig took out sixth seed Chase Buchanan of Ohio State in a thrilling three-set match, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2. His run came to an end when he met Kentucky’s Eric Quigley in the quarterfinals. Quigley advances to the semifinals and will meet Illinios’ Dennis Nevolo.

A standout on Day 2 was University of Florida’s Joanna Mather. The match up against Chelsey Gullickson did not disappoint. The two traded powerful groundstrokes and exchanged baseline winners. Ultimately, Mather was successful in pulling through, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Mather went on to win her quarterfinal match vs. Lauren McHale of UNC Chapel Hill in straight sets.

Men's No. 1 seed Mitchell Frank eased his way into the semifinals after defeating Oklahoma’s Costin Paval, 6-0, 6-2. Frank’s strong serve overpowered his competition, and he has dropped only one set throughout the duration of the tournament. He will face Henrique Cunha of Duke in his semifinal match.

Other winners included doubles duo Billy Federhofer and Nassim Slilam of Florida, who defeated No. 1 seeds Kevin King and Juan Spir of Georgia Tech, 9-7; Dennis Nevolo of Illinios, who beat Kevin King of Georgia Tech, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4; and Eric Quigley of the University of Kentucky, who topped Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The day ended with a battle between Nicole Gibbs of Stanford and Anna Bartenstein of the University of Miami. It was a rematch from last month’s ITA Women’s All-American Championships, where Bartenstein came out victorious in three sets. But the Stanford sophomore had her redemption and fought back for the win after being down a set, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Special Guests at the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships

The tournament had 108 special visitors. Children from the New York Junior Tennis League (NYJTL) made a trip to the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, where they were treated to an autograph session with the players, as well as a tour of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The NYJTL is the largest tennis and education-themed community organization in the United States and offers school and community-based programs throughout New York City’s five boroughs.

"This is an unbelievable opportunity for our participants. For them to actually come out to the site of the US Open and to see the best college tennis players compete and live their dream, it gives them a goal to aspire to. It is really a treat for them," said Ron Nano, Director of Tennis, NYJTL.
