October 2013 Honor Roll

The monthly USTA Player Development Player and Coach Honor Roll recognizes the top performing young Americans and their coaches each month.

Here’s a look at some of the most outstanding performances turned in by American tennis players ages 20 and younger in October:

CiCi Bellis (April 8, 1999), Atherton, Calif. – Bellis strung together strong results on the ITF Junior Circuit in October. She began the month by winning the singles title in Wichita Falls, Texas, defeating Emma Higuchi in the final, then won the Evert American ITF event in Boca Raton, Fla., overcoming Katerina Stewart in the final (Stewart was a doubles champion, with Sofia Kenin). She is coached by her mother Lori.

Tornado Alicia Black (May 12, 1998), Boca Raton, Fla. – Black continued her success on the junior circuit by winning the singles title at the Pan American ITF event in Tulsa, Okla., defeating Kaitlyn McCarthy in the title match. She is coached by Lawrence Carpio.

Taylor Fritz (Oct. 28, 1997), Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. – Fritz began the month by sweeping the singles and doubles titles, winning the doubles with Nathan Ponwith, at the ITF Junior Circuit event in Wichita Falls, Texas, then reached the singles final at the Pan American ITF event in Tulsa, Okla. He is coached by his father Guy.

Spencer Furman (Aug. 20, 1997), Woodinville, Wash. – Furman reached the singles final of the National Bank ITF event in Victoria, British Colombia, and made the doubles final, losing to champions Luke Jacob Gamble and Myles Schalet. He is coached by Dan Willman

Olivia Hauger (Sept. 26, 1997), Tulsa, Okla. – Hauger reached the singles final and won the doubles title of the Uruguay Bowl ITF Junior event. She is coached by Trent Tucker.

Robert Levine (Sept. 18, 1997), Bedford, N.Y. – Levine won the singles title at the V Copa Mangu ITF Junior Circuit event in the Dominican Republic. He is coached by Carl Thorsen.

Stephanie Nemtsova (April 15, 1998), Dennis Port, Mass. – Nemtsova won the girls’ singles title at the V Copa Mangu ITF Junior Circuit event in the Dominican Republic (Sara Kelly was a doubles champion).

Nathan Ponwith (April 20, 1998), Scottsdale, Ariz. – Ponwith won the singles title at the Evert American ITF junior event in Boca Raton, Fla., overcoming Catalin Mateas in the final (Alfredo Perez and Sam Riffice were the doubles champions), and won the doubles title at the Wichita Falls ITF event in Wichita Falls, Texas. He is coached by Lou Belken.

Francis Tiafoe (Jan. 20, 1998), College Park, Md. – Tiafoe swept the singles and doubles titles at the Pan American ITF event in Tulsa, Okla., beating Taylor Fritz in the singles final and taking the doubles title with Michael Mmoh. He is coached by Misha Kouznetsov.
