The monthly USTA Player Development Player and Coach Honor Roll recognizes the top performing young Americans and their coaches each month.
Here’s a look at some of the most outstanding performances turned in by American tennis players ages 20 and younger in March:
Collin Altamirano (Dec. 7, 1995), Yuba City, Calif. – Altamirano, the reigning USTA Boys’ 18s champion, qualified and reached the singles semifinals at the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 Futures in Bakersfield, Calif., falling to eventual champion Daniel Kosakowski in three sets. He is coached by Joseph Gilbert.
Usue Arconada (Oct. 28, 1998), College Park, Md. – At the Asuncion Bowl in Lambare, Paraguay, Arconada advanced to the singles final and won the doubles title. Later in the month, she made a run to the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Tenis de Porto Alegre. She is coached by Frank Salazar.
Jimmy Bendeck (Nov. 21, 1996), Hollywood, Fla. – Bendeck didn’t lost more than three games in a single set en route to winning the singles title at the Copa Sultana-Mayaguez ITF Junior event in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Madison Bourguignon (Sept. 19, 1997), Boynton Beach, Fla. – Bourguignon tore through two ITF junior tournaments in South America, winning singles titles and reaching the doubles finals at both the Copa Universidad Galileo in Guatemala and the Costa Rica Bowl in San Jose, Costa Rica. She is coached by Lawrence Carpio.
Liam Caruana (Jan. 22, 1998), New Braunfels, Texas – Caruana reached the singles final of the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. He is coached by his father Max.
Hannah Chang (Feb. 25, 1998), Burlington, Mass. – Chang, as a wild card, reached the singles semifinals at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif.
Louisa Chirico (May 16, 1996), Harrison, N.Y. – Chirico, still ranked among the Top-10 juniors in the world, qualified and advanced to the semifinals of the USTA Pro Circuit $25,000 event in Innisbrook, Fla., where she lost in three sets to two-time defending NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs. She works with USTA National Coach Jay Gooding.
Lauren Davis (Oct. 9, 1993), Boca Raton, Fla. – Davis produced the best result of her career so far at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., defeating No. 3 seed Victoria Azarenka in the second round en route to a fourth-round showing before a stomach illness forced her to withdraw. She works with USTA National Coach Juan Todero.
Jared Donaldson (Oct. 9, 1996), Cumberland, R.I. – Donaldson, the 2013 USTA Boys’ 18s runner-up, had success playing Futures events in Turkey, reached the singles final in Alibey and the semifinals in Belconti. He is coached by Taylor Dent.
Walker Duncan (May 7, 1996), Atlanta – Duncan had an impressive month on the ITF Junior Circuit, winning the singles title at the Claremont ITF event in Claremont, Calif., and reaching the singles semifinals and winning the doubles title with Emil Reinberg at the Costa Rica Bowl. He is coached by Grant Stafford.
Jenna Friedel (Oct. 21, 1997), Mill Valley, Calif. – Friedel advanced to the singles semifinals at the Costa Rica Bowl in San Jose, Costa Rica, and also reached the doubles final at the Copa Universidad Galileo ITF Junior event in Guatemala City. She is coached by Lawrence Carpio.
Jake Gabay (April 22, 1997), Safety Harbor, Fla. – Gabay won 11 of his 13 singles matches on the ITF Junior Circuit in March, qualifying and reaching the semifinals of the Copa Sultana-Mayaguez event in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. He is coached by Kevin Quay.
Marcos Giron (July 24, 1993), Thousand Oaks, Calif. – Giron, a junior at UCLA, won his third USTA Pro Circuit title in March at the $10,000 hard-court Futures in Calabasas, Calif. He is coached by Billy Martin, Grant Chen and Amir Marandy.
Hady Habib (Aug. 21, 1998), Bradenton, Fla. – Habib won eight straight matches in the Copa Sultana-Mayaguez, qualifying and advancing to the singles final before falling to Jimmy Bendeck in the title match. He trains at the IMG Academy.
Ellyse Hamlin (Nov. 9, 1996), Fairfield, Conn. – Hamlin, as the top seed, advanced to the singles semifinals at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. She is coached by Ryan Ginley.
Emma Higuchi (Feb. 1, 1998), Los Angeles – Higuchi reached the singles final at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. She works with USTA National Coaches Leo Azevedo and Adam Peterson.
Jessica Ho (Jan. 5, 1997), Wexford, Pa. – Ho reached the singles semifinals and the doubles final at the Argentina Cup ITF Junior event in Cordoba, Argentina. She trains at the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy.
Dasha Ivanova (Oct. 11, 1996), Beaverton, Ore. – Ivanova advanced to the singles semifinals at the Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Tenis de Porto Alegre. She is coached by Lawrence Carpio.
Raveena Kingsley (July 23, 1998), Parkton, Md. – Kingsley reached the singles semifinals at the Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Championships in Manila, Philippines. She is coached by Oliver Akli.
Mitchell Krueger (Jan. 12, 1994), Fort Worth, Texas – Krueger reached the singles final at the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 hard-court Futures in Bakersfield, Calif., falling to fellow American Daniel Kosakowski in the title match. He is coached by Dave Licker and works with USTA National Coach Stanford Boster.
Claire Liu (May 25, 2000), Thousand Oaks, Calif. – The prodigious 13-year-old Liu won the singles title and reached the doubles final at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. She works with USTA National Coaches Leo Azevedo and Adam Peterson.
Mwendwa Mbithi (Jan. 10, 1998), Succasunna, N.J. – Mbithi reached the semifinals at the ITF Malacca International Junior Championships in Malacca, Malaysia. He is coached by his father Jackson.
Grace Min (May 6, 1994), Atlanta – Min, the 2011 US Open junior champion, collected her fourth singles title on the USTA Pro Circuit, winning the $25,000 clay-court event in Innisbrook, Fla. She works with USTA National Coach Roger Anderson.
Gabriel Pilones (No. 11, 1997), Bradenton, Fla. – Pilones advanced to the singles semifinals at the Copa Sultana-Mayaguez ITF Junior event in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. He trains at the IMG Academy.
Gaby Pollner (Dec. 16, 1997), Boca Raton, Fla. – Pollner won the doubles title at the Costa Rica Bowl ITF Junior event in San Jose, Costa Rica. She is coached by Shenay Perry.
Luciana Rabines (Oct. 1, 1998) – Rabines reached the singles semifinals and the doubles final at the first Qatar ITF Junior Open. She is coached by Ana Timotic.
Emil Reinberg (April 20, 1997), Atlanta – Reinberg reached the singles semifinals at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif., and paired with Walker Duncan to win the doubles title at the Costa Rica Bowl. He is coached by Grant Stafford.
Johnnise Renaud (May 10, 1996), North Miami, Fla. – Renaud put together two solid weeks on the ITF Junior Circuit in South Africa, winning the singles title in Potchefstroom, then reaching the singles title match in another tournament there the next week. She is coached by Bill Adams.
Gabrielle Schuck (May 20, 1997), Colorado Springs, Colo. – Schuck qualified and reached the singles final at the Copa Sultana-Mayaguez ITF Junior tournament in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, falling in three sets to Great Britain’s Anna Brogan in the title match. She is coached by Mandy Wilson.
Ena Shibahara (Feb. 12, 1998), Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif. – Shibahara paired up with Savannah Slaysman to win the doubles title at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. She is coached by her father Yoshi.
Savannah Slaysman (Dec. 31, 1997), Phoenix – Slaysman paired up with Ena Shibahara to win the doubles title at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. She is coached by Joey Blake.
Katerina Stewart (July 17, 1997), Miami – Stewart, the reigning USTA Girls’ 16s champion, won her first USTA Pro Circuit title in March at the $10,000 clay-court event in Orlando, Fla. She also qualified and reached the final of a $10,000 clay-court event in Gainesville, Fla., a week earlier, then reached the quarterfinals at the $25,000 clay-court tournament in Innisbrook, Fla., a week later. She is coached by her father Cesar.
Jean Thirouin (Sept. 18, 1997), Houston – Thirouin reached the singles semifinals and the doubles quarterfinals at the Claremont ITF Junior event in Claremont, Calif. He is coached by Lawrence Carpio.
Karina Kristina Vyrlan (Oct. 21, 1998), Sacramento, Calif. – Vyrlan qualified and advanced to the singles semifinals at the Costa Rica Bowl ITF Junior event in San Jose, Costa Rica.
