The monthly USTA Player Development Player and Coach Honor Roll recognizes the top performing young Americans and their coaches each month.
 
Here’s a look at some of the most outstanding performances turned in by American tennis players ages 20 and younger in August:
 
Collin Altamirano (Dec. 7, 1995), Yuba City, Calif. – Altamirano won the USTA Boys’ 18s national championship in Kalamazoo, Mich., beating Jared Donaldson (Oct. 9, 1996, Cumberland, R.I.) to become the first unseeded player in the tournament’s 71 years in Kalamazoo to win the title and earning a wild-card entry into the US Open main draw. He is coached by Joseph Gilbert.
 
Robin Anderson (April 12, 1993), Matawan, N.J. – Anderson, after completing her sophomore season at UCLA, reached the semifinals of the $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Landisville, Pa.
 
Madison Appel (May 31, 1997), Locust Valley, N.Y. – Appel reached the singles semifinals and won the doubles title at the Coca Cola ITF Junior event in St. Lucia. She is coached by Carlos Zapata.
 
Hurricane Tyra Black, Boca Raton, Fla. – Black, whose older sister, Tornado Alicia, made headlines by reaching the final of the US Open Junior Championships, won the USTA Girls’ 12s National Championships, beating Carson Branstine (Orange, Calif.) in the final. She is coached by her father, Sly, and her mother, Gayal.
 
Jenson Brooksby, Sacramento, Calif. – Brooksby won the USTA Boys’ 12s national title, beating Thomas Yu (Bellevue, Wash.) in the singles final. He is coached by Joseph Gilbert.
 
Brian Cernoch (Sept. 9, 1999), North Bethesda, Md. – Cernoch won the USTA Boys’ 14s national singles title, beating doubles finalist Max Mendelsohn (Little Rock, Ark.) in the final. He is coached by Brandyn Fisher.
 
Rachel Chong (Nov. 8, 1996), Danville, Calif. – Chong won the singles title at the Copa Tampico ITF Junior event, then reached the semifinals at the Monterrey Country ITF Junior Cup in Monterrey, both in Mexico.
 
Kayla Day, Santa Barbara, Calif. – Day won the USTA Girls’ 14s singles national title, edging out Ashley Lahey (Boulder, Colo.) in the title match. She works with USTA National Coaches Leo Azevedo and Adam Peterson.
 
Vicky Duval (Nov. 30, 1995), Bradenton, Fla. – Duval made international headlines at the US Open, where, after qualifying, she upset 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the first round. She is coached by her mother.
 
Jenna Friedel (Oct. 21, 1997), Mill Valley, Calif. – Friedel won the girls’ singles title at the XXII Copa Merengue ITF Junior event in the Dominican Republic, beating fellow American Ellyse Graci (Sept. 10, 1996, Ocean Ridge, Fla.) in the title match, and also took the doubles title with Claudia Wiktorin (Dec. 16, 1996, Davidson, N.C.). She trains at L’Academie de Tennis.
 
Stefan Kozlov (Feb. 1, 1998), Pembroke Pines, Fla. -- Kozlov reached the singles final at the International Hard Court Championship in College Park, Md. He works with USTA National Coach Nicolas Todero.
 
Daniel Maese (Feb. 15, 1996), Dallas – Maese put together a strong run of junior events in Mexico in August. He reached the singles semifinals and won the doubles title at the Compa Tampico and reached the singles final and won the doubles title at the Monterrey San Agustin ITF Junior Cup in San Agustin. He trains at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch.
 
Tommy Paul (May 17, 1997), Coconut Creek, Fla. – Paul won the USTA Boys’ 16s National Championship in Kalamazoo, Mich., beating Jake DeVine (May 22, 1997, Boca Raton, Fla.) in the final. He works with USTA National Coaches Diego Moyano and Eric Nunez.
 
Bernarda Pera (Dec. 3, 1994) – Pera won a $10,000 pro circuit event in the Netherlands. She is coached by Jorge Aguirre.
 
Ryan Peus (May 10, 1999), Santa Barbara, Calif. -- Peus reached the singles semifinals at both the Tobago ITF Junior tournament in Trinidad & Tobago and the SVGTA ITF Junior International in St. Vincent, winning the doubles title at the latter. She works with USTA National Coaches Leo Azevedo and Adam Peterson.
 
Myles Schalet (Aug. 12, 1996), Montville, N.J. -- Schalet won three of four possible titles in two ITF Junior tournaments in August, sweeping the singles and doubles crowns at the SVGTA ITF Junior International in St. Vincent and winning the doubles title and reaching the singles final at the Coca Cola ITF in St. Lucia. He is coached by Colon Nunez.
 
Sofia Sewing (July 22, 1999), Doral, Fla. -- After reaching the singles final at the Monterrey Country ITF Junior Cup in Monterrey, Mexico, Sewing swept the singles and doubles titles at the Monterrey San Agustin ITF Junior Cup in San Agustin, Mexico.
 
Jack Sock (Sept. 24, 1992), Lincoln, Neb. – Sock reached the third round of the US Open for the second straight year, taking down Philipp Petzschner and Maximo Gonzalez. He works with USTA National Coach Craig Boynton.
 
Katerina Stewart (July 17, 1997), Miami – Stewart won the USTA Girls’ 16 national title, edging doubles champion Ena Shibahara (Feb. 12, 1998, Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) in the singles final to earn a wild card into the US Open Junior Championship. She is coached by her father Caesar.
 
Sloane Stephens (March 20, 1993), Plantation, Fla. – Stephens reached the fourth round of the US Open before falling to eventual champion Serena Williams and rose to a career-high No. 13 in the world. She works with USTA National Coach David Nainkin.
 
Jean Thirouin (Sept. 18, 1997), Boynton Beach, Fla. – Thirouin won the singles title at the Coca Cola ITF Junior event in St. Lucia, then reached the singles final and won the doubles title at the Tobago ITF Junior event in Trinidad & Tobago. He trains at L’Academie de Tennis.
 
Sachia Vickery (May 11, 1995), Hollywood, Fla. – Vickery swept the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships in San Diego, beating Allie Kiick (June 30, 1995, Plantation, Fla.) in the singles final and winning the doubles title with her. Vickery earned a wild card into the US Open singles main draw, where she reached the second round, and the doubles main draw. She works with USTA National Coach Jamea Jackson.
 
Karina Vyrlan (Oct. 21, 1998) Sacramento, Calif. – Vyrlan reached the singles final at the Monterrey San Agustin ITF Junior Cup in Mexico.
