RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Top-seeded boys’ 14s player Henrik Wiersholm of Kirkland, Wash., won his opening-round match at the 44th annual Easter Bowl USTA Junior Spring National Championships taking place at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort on Sunday.
Wiersholm beat Weil Academy’s Fabian Schaefer of Ventura, Calif., 6-1, 6-1, and afterwards said he expected to be the one player guys are gunning for.
"For sure, it’s always tough to be the top seed," said Wiersholm, who is here this week with coach Dan Willman. "But that’s expected, and you just have to play through it."
Wiersholm said he’s been looking forward to the Easter Bowl for awhile. He lost last year in a tough three-setter in the round of 32 to top-seeded Daniel Kerznerman.
Schaefer was simply overwhelmed but said he was fortunate to have the experience on such a big stage and vowed to do better next time out. He said he had never faced a player as strong as Wiersholm.
In the biggest upset of the day, Ryan Shen of Newbury Park, Calif., beat No. 3-seeded Francis Tiafoe of College Park, Md., 6-4, 6-1. Tiafoe never even got to finish the match officially, as he was defaulted at 5-1, 40-30, for racquet abuse.
"I just played real consistent and kept my composure," said Shen, who is coached by Blake Russ of Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks, the same Southern California city that Sam Querrey is from. "My coach Blake just said not to worry about who you’re playing. Just take it one match at a time."
On the girls’ side, top-seeded Lauren Goodman of Fort Wayne, Ind., won her first-round match against Chloe Lee of Albuquerque, N.M., 6-4, 6-1.
On Tuesday night, former world No. 1 Mats Wilander will speak to all Easter Bowl players, coaches and parents at 7 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom at Rancho Las Palmas. The public is invited to attend his talk free of charge.
