Boys’ 18s ITF action kicks off at Easter Bowl

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.
– Defending champion and No. 1 seed Bjorn Fratangelo won easily in his opening match in the boys’ ITF 18s division, while there was no shortage of big upsets on the girls’ side on Tuesday at the 44th annual Easter Bowl USTA Spring National Championships, taking place at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort.

Fratangelo, who made it to the finals at the Carson International Spring Championships last week, defeated Sean Karl, 6-1, 6-4. The Pittsburgh native is trying to become the second back-to-back Easter Bowl boys’ 18s champion, as Grey King was the only player to ever accomplish the feat way back in 1971-72.

Heading into the tournament, Fratangelo said he understood he had a big target on his back, being the defending champion and No. 1 seed.

"I know everyone is gunning for me and my opponents are going to put forth their best effort when they play me," Fratangelo said. "Because of that, I know I have to be on top of my game every match."

Fifteen-year-old Allie Kiick, who won the 2010 Dunlop Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships in the girls’ 16s as a wild card, upset No. 3-seeded Lauren Herring, 6-3, 6-3, in a girls’ ITF 18s second-round match.

"It wasn’t quite the Orange Bowl final, but that was pretty big," said Kiick, whose father Jim Kiick played in three Super Bowls for the Miami Dolphins in the 1970s. "It’s been different playing up in the 18s, a big adjustment for me. The girls are just so much more mature and play such a different style of game."

Kiick made it to the quarterfinals last year in the 14s in her first Easter Bowl.

In two other marquee girls’ 18s matches, No. 1-seeded Grace Min advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Whitney Kay, and unseeded Samantha Crawford ousted No. 11-seeded 15-year-old Brooke Austin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

In the upset of the day, Meredith Xepoleas defeated No. 1 seed Lauren Goodman, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the third round of the girls’ 14s. Still just 13 years of age, Xepoleas had some extra motivation coming into the match.

"I didn’t want to go home and do my math homework," Xepoleas said smiling.

The victory is a big confidence booster for the Newport Beach, Calif., resident, who trains in Carson. Xepoleas missed more than a month of matches after being in a cast due to a stress fracture in her right foot and is beginning to settle into form.

"I feel like I’m getting better with each match and my foot is feeling great," Xepoleas said.

Xepoleas struggled with Goodman’s aggressive style of play in the first set but began to find her way after breaking Goodman early in the second set.

"The beginning of the second set was the turning point for me," Xepoleas said. "I got more balls in and began to attack and was able to pull through."

Xepoleas faces Alexandra Letzt at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Rancho Las Palmas Resort.

In yet another surprise in the girls’ 14s, Mehvish Safdar of Mason, Ohio, beat No. 4 seed Maria Smith of Houston, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in a match that lasted over four hours. Smith fought off a match point at 5-3 in the third, but Safdar hung on for the victory.

"I wasn’t expecting to win, but once I began playing better in the second set, I knew I had a chance," Safdar said. "My recent experience with close matches helped me stay mentally tough, and that was the key."
