SKILLMAN , N.J. -- The USC men and Duke women, each ranked No. 1 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings since winning the 2009 NCAA team titles, take their top ranking to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend completed play earlier this week, advancing the 15 men's and 15 women's teams that successfully won both of their matches to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The University of Virginia hosts the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club, while the University of Wisconsin will host the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Both tournaments take place Feb. 12-15, 2010.
Follow the Leader: For the men, following USC is (in order): Virginia, Ohio State, UCLA, Tennessee, Baylor, Georgia, Texas, Stanford and Ole Miss. On the women's side, Duke is followed by: Northwestern, California, Georgia, Baylor, Miami (FL), Florida, USC, Georgia Tech and Tennessee.
Conference Count: Men's Top 25: SEC - 7; ACC - 6; Pac-10 - 5; Big 12 and Big Ten - 3; Big East and WCC - 1. Five different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with three Pac-10 schools from the state of California (USC, UCLA and Stanford) claiming three of the top 10 spots. Women's Top 25: ACC and SEC - 7; Pac-10 - 5; Big Ten - 2; Big 12, Big East, Conference USA and MWC - 1. The top six spots are each filled by a team from a different conference while four Pac-10 schools from the Golden State (California, USC, UCLA and Stanford) are among the top 15.
On the Move: In men's play, the top 11 remained the same with host sites Texas A&M and Florida State dropping in the rankings after occurring losses during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Fresno State upset the Aggies as the No. 4 seed at College Station. The previously 46th-ranked Bulldogs jumped 20 spots, just missing the Top 25 after becoming to only No. 4 squad to advance in men's or women's play in ITA Kick-Off Weekend history. On the women's side, Notre Dame dropped out of the top 10 after losing to surging North Carolina. However, the biggest drop came from the other Fresno State program. The Bulldog women dropped both matches during Kick-Off Weekend, including a loss to Florida State, which was the only top 25 team to lose last week. The western FSU almost doubled its ranking, falling from 15th to 29th.
Twice as Nice: Thirteen schools have both their men's and women's programs ranked inside this week's top 25.
