Clervie Ngounoue, Kyle Kang headline headline U.S. World Junior Tennis Finals teams

Six of America’s top 14-and-under juniors, including Clervie Ngounoue and Kyle Kang, will represent the U.S. in the World Junior Tennis Finals, the world’s premier 14-and-under team competition, Aug. 5-10 in Prostejov, Czech Republic.

Each three-player team will compete against 15 other nations from around the world, first in round-robin matches, then in a knockout bracket. More information can be found on the International Tennis Federation’s website.

World Junior Tennis – Girls

Clervie Ngounoue (13, Washington, D.C.; Coach: Aime Ngounoue)

World Junior Tennis – Boys

Ngounoue won the girls’ 12s singles title at the prestigious Orange Bowl international junior tournament in Miami, Fla., last winter. Driscoll, ranked No. 7 in the USTA girls’ 14s national rankings, took home the girls’ 14s singles title at the Easter Bowl in March. Lopez reached the singles semifinals at both the USTA Girls’ 16s National Clay Court Championships earlier this month, as well as at the Easter Bowl, where she competed in the girls’ 14s division in the spring.

Kang is ranked No. 16 in the USTA boys’ 14s national rankings and reached the quarterfinals at the Eddie Herr International junior tournament in Bradenton, Fla., last winter. Basavareddy was the boys’ 14s singles champion and doubles finalist at the USTA National Clay Court Championships, while Charlap reached the semifinals of the boys’ 14s doubles draw at the same event, eventually placing third.   

At last year's finals, the U.S. boys won the title, while the girls finished third. The boys’ title was the fifth for the U.S. (2002-03, 2008, 2012, 2018). The girls will be looking to add to their seven World Junior Tennis titles (1992, 2007-10, 2013, 2017) this year. Former U.S. junior international team members include Jim Courier, Andy Roddick, James Blake, Lindsay Davenport, and Sloane Stephens. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic also have represented their respective countries in junior international team competition.
