Top U.S. juniors to compete at Junior Wimbledon

Nine boys and eight girls of the United States have been accepted into the main draw and the qualifying draw at the 2012 Junior Championships at Wimbledon. The main draw will be played June 30-July 8 at The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in London; qualifying will be played June 28-29. 
 
The following juniors have been accepted into the boys’ and girls’ singles draws and will represent the United States:

Townsend, 16, is currently the top-ranked girl in the ITF World Junior Rankings and is the first American to hold the No. 1 junior ranking since Donald Young in 2005. In January, Townsend swept the girls’ singles and doubles titles at the Australian Open, becoming the first American to capture both junior titles at a Grand Slam since Lindsay Davenport at the 1992 US Open. Scholl, 16, is currently No. 9 in the ITF World Junior Rankings and was a finalist at the 2012 USTA International Spring Championships in Carson, Calif., where she lost to Kiick, 16, the daughter of former Miami Dolphins running back Jim Kiick. Vickery, 17, is ranked a career-high No. 8 and captured the singles title at the Coffee Bowl in Costa Rica in January.
 
Krueger, 18, is the highest-ranked American boy at No. 7 in the ITF World Junior Rankings. This year, he reached the boys’ semifinals at Roland Garros and won the doubles title at the Easter Bowl with Halebian, 18, who was the Easter Bowl singles runner-up. McDonald, 17, captured the 2012 Easter Bowl title and reached the boys’ semifinals at the Australian Open as a qualifier, while Rubin, 16, is ranked a career-high No. 14 and reached the boys’ quarterfinals at Roland Garros.   
 
Townsend, Scholl, Kiick, Papa, Halebian, Kwiatkowski and Kozlov are all currently training full-time at the USTA Player Development Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.
 
Jordan Cox reached the Wimbledon boys’ final as a qualifier in 2009. Americans also reached the boys’ and girls’ finals in 2007, when Donald Young became the first American to win the Wimbledon Junior title since Scott Humphries in 1994 and Madison Brengle became the first American girl to reach the final since Chanda Rubin won the event in 1992.
