WHITE WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., March 12, 2007 – The United States Tennis Association today announced that Timon Corwin of Kalamazoo, Mich., has been named Senior Director for Junior and Collegiate Competition for USTA Player Development. Corwin, the Men’s Athletics Director and Men’s Tennis Coach at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College, has been the Tournament Director of the USTA National Boys’ 16s and 18s Championships since 1993.
“Timon is uniquely qualified for this position with a broad background in both junior and collegiate tennis,” said Paul Roetert, Managing Director, USTA Player Development. “In addition to his work in Kalamazoo, he has been a volunteer member of the USTA Youth Competition and Training Committee and the USTA Collegiate Committee.”
As the Senior Director for Junior and Collegiate Competition, Corwin is charged with providing overall direction to the junior and college competition and training department. He will oversee all USTA national junior tournaments.
Before joining the USTA Player Development staff in Key Biscayne, Fla., Corwin will finish his coaching duties with Kalamazoo College, where he has served as head coach since 1993. His teams have finished third or higher in the nation six times, including two national runner-up finishes (1997, 1999). Entering the 2007 season, Corwin owned a career record of 248-109 (.695) overall and 71-1 (.986) in MIAA competition. He was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 1997 and Midwest Regional Coach of the Year in 1999.
Corwin played professionally after a successful collegiate career at Kalamazoo College. As an eight-time All-American in singles and doubles with the Kalamazoo men’s tennis team from 1983-86, Corwin led his squad to the 1986 NCAA Division III team championship title while winning the singles crown. That year, Corwin was the recipient of the ITA’s National Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. Corwin went on to complete a post-graduate fellowship at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, Germany in 1987 and earned his law degree from the Marquette University Law School in 1992.
