Despite upsets, UCLA and USC remain No. 1 in Campbell/ITA Team Rankings

April 25, 2012 06:58 AM
SKILLMAN, N.J. -- A pair of LA upsets shocked the college tennis world last Friday, but it wasn't enough to shake up the top of the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Team Rankings. At the Los Angeles Tennis Center, top-ranked UCLA was beaten by No. 4 USC by a surprising 6-1 margin. The Women of Troy took the doubles point and won five singles matches in straight sets. The USC victory left the Pac-12's NCAA bid up for grabs, with the Stanford Cardinal now in the driver's seat. If Stanford can defeat Washington State on Wednesday in a match rescheduled due to a rain out, the Cardinal will once again receive automatic entry in the NCAA Championships.

The more stunning upset on Friday took place at USC's Marks Stadium, where the No. 1 Trojans saw a 45-match winning streak snapped by cross-town rival No. 5 UCLA. USC was seemingly in command with a 3-1 lead, but the bottom half of the Bruins lineup came up with three-set victories to propel UCLA to victory. The Bruins finished off an undefeated conference slate, giving them the regular season title. Both teams now turn their focus to Ojai, Calif., the site of the 2012 Pac-12 Championships. The Pac-12 automatic berth on the men's side will be decided at the Championships for the first time, as the event has switched to dual format for the first time in the history of the event.

SEC Tournament titles gave a big boost to both the Florida women and Georgia men in this week's Campbell/ITA Team Rankings. The Gators moved ahead of ACC Tournament champion Duke to check in at No. 2 this week following their SEC Women's Tournament triumph. The Bulldogs vaulted up to second after being ranked fourth last week, thanks to their defeat of fellow top-10 SEC squad Kentucky in the finals of the SEC Men's Tournament.

Follow the Leader: For the men, following USC is (in order): Georgia, Ohio State, Virginia, UCLA, Kentucky, Pepperdine, Duke, Mississippi State and Stanford. On the women's side, UCLA is followed by: Florida, Duke, USC, Stanford, Georgia, North Carolina, California, Alabama and Miami (FL).

Conference Count: The number of men's and women's teams from each conference that appears in the Campbell/ITA Division I Top 25 Rankings is listed numerically. Men's Top 25: SEC - 8; Pac-12 - 4; ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten - 3; WCC - 2; Conference USA and Ivy League - 1. The Pac-12 and SEC have placed three teams in the top 10 of this week's poll. Women's Top 25: ACC - 6; SEC - 5; Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 - 4; Big East and Conference USA - 1. All four of the Pac-12 teams ranked in the top 25 landed inside the top 10 this week, including three in the top five.

Double Dip: A total of 16 schools have placed both their men's and women's teams in this week's Campbell/ITA Rankings top 25. Duke, Georgia, Stanford, UCLA and USC find both their men's and women's teams in the top 10 this week.
